The Town House is a three-storey building dating from the 17th C. The upper storey windows are slatted as it was used as a maltings. The living room had a hidden altar in one cupboard and another cupboard was lead-lined with a lead sink for holding wines. In the 18th century it belonged to a family called Burn, the last of whom was Captain Peter Burn, RN. He served under Lord Nelson and was present at the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1801 and at Trafalgar in 1805. After Capt. Burn the house was eventually occupied by the Sherrat family who worked the surrounding land, growing flowers, fruit and vegetables until Alistair Sherrat retired and the present houses were built on the market garden land in 1977. "The Gardens" the area around the house, enclosed by an ancient high wall, was originally established to meet the needs of the 13th cent. monastery at Luffness.
