Register your interest NOW by e-mailing us at: broadband@aberlady.org

Provide us with your full name, BT telephone number and postcode and we'll do the work and register for you!

Registering your interest in Broadband does not commit you to any future purchase or any expense at this stage. You are only registering an interest in the product.

The graph below shows the current number of registrations from Aberlady residents towards the target of 150.

What is Broadband?

Broadband is the common term for a high bandwidth Internet connection - one that is always on and capable of transmitting data up to 40 times faster than a normal dial-up modem. British Telecom offers ADSL (a technical term) Broadband services over your existing BT telephone line, separating the voice and data signals, so you can make and receive normal calls while you are still on-line.

Why should I register?

Although nearby exchanges like Haddington and Tranent were enabled for Broadband earlier this year, there are still many like Aberlady that have yet to be upgraded. BT has been encouraging customers connected to such exchanges to register their interest in Broadband services by setting "trigger levels". When this number of registrations is reached, upgrading of the exchange and connection to the national Broadband network is automatically initiated. Aberlady has a trigger level of 150 registrations.

It is important to understand that you will only be indicating your interest in broadband. Your registering COSTS NOTHING and there is absolutely NO COMMITMENT to subscribe to the service when it becomes available. Even if you do not have a computer and do not use the Internet at present, you can still register your interest for the benefit of friends, neighbours, and local businesses. A final point - there is growing evidence that the value of your property could be affected if it is located in an area not yet served by a Broadband-enabled exchange.

Benefits

Business users will readily appreciate the potential savings to be made in time and money by having access to Broadband services but the benefits of speed and ease of use, all for a fixed monthly charge, also apply to every resident in their own home, whether at work or play. If you work from home, then you will really see a great improvement in your communications capabilities.

Costs

Once the Aberlady exchange is enabled for Broadband, everyone (whether they registered or not) will be able to subscribe through one of the many Internet Service Providers offering a variety of packages with differing prices, speeds and contract periods. Currently, one package is available for as little as £11.75 per month (excluding activation fee and ADSL modem). This is in additional to the normal BT line rental, but overall is potentially cheaper than dial-up calls to the internet.
