Pictures of Old Aberlady

Every picture tells a story. A collection of more than 300 photographs of Aberlady past and present have been loaded onto the internet by Aberlady Conservation Society to promote the village’s heritage.

These include digitised images of a 1920’s collection “Flora of Aberlady” by the Reid family which once lived in the village. This collection will be the focus of a lecture in the village by expert staff of East Lothian Council and the Royal Botanical Gardens, Edinburgh on 12 November.

During the Edwardian era, Aberlady was a highly popular tourist destination and families from Edinburgh and farther field would rent entire properties for the long summer months. Accommodation was at a premium. The rural village’s popularity meant it featured in a large number of postcards printed for the tourist market. Many of these are shown in the collection. Other photographs in the collection include those of Aberlady taken by W F Jackson in the years 1911-13; donations by Hamish Learmont in relation to the Smith and Lunn families; and Maggie Reid, grand-daughter of village poet, author and historian, John Pringle Reid, whose family lived in the village for generations.
