NORTH BERWICK HIGH SCHOOL

After completing their primary education at Aberlady Primary School, children from Aberlady move on to the local high school in North Berwick.

North Berwick High School is a six year non-denominational school which serves the town of North Berwick and its surrounding hinterland of small towns, villages and farming areas. The school had a major refurbishment in 1997, which enlarged it substantially, and work is due to start in Spring 2003 on further refurbishment and enlargement. The School's current roll is 835 and there are 61 full time equivalent staff. There are many placement requests from outwith the catchment, and East Lothian Council caps the rolls at S1/2 to allow for the controlled growth of the School and for local residents to enrol if they come into the community served by the School.

North Berwick High School aims to offer education of the highest quality through high attainment and standards, social inclusion and the promotion of lifelong learning. It also aims to enhance the quality of life and the environment and to encourage active citizenship.

Pupils' overall performance at Standard Grade, Higher and Advanced Higher is very good and is consistently well above the national average. The percentage of pupils gaining awards is well above the national average.

Staff provide very good opportunities for pupils to take part in an extensive range of extra curricular activities and excursions. There is a strong emphasis on sporting clubs, music, fund raising for charities and participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
