"Staff and parents working together
to provide the best possible education for all pupils."
Aberlady Primary School is a non-denominational, co-educational, Local Authority School. It provides for pupils from approximately 3-12 years of age (Nursery - P7)
The school has been functioning for longer than memories last and no definite date for the commencement of education in Aberlady can be given. The present building was opened in 1931. See: www.el4.org.uk/parish/aberlady.php
A specialist nursery unit and two new classrooms were added a few years ago. The environment plays a very important part in the curriculum of the present day primary school and this school is privileged in being located in an area as stimulating and encouraging as that of Aberlady.

The school aims to:
The provision of specialist teachers varies from session to session. They visit the school regularly on a specified day, and teach groups or classes of children. At present these cover: Physical Education, Music (with an additional specialist teaching violin,) and Art.
For some years in East Lothian there have been successful developments in integrating children with special educational needs into mainstream schools. The Learning Support Teacher liaises with the Head Teacher, Speech Therapist, Child Guidance and Learning Support Adviser on matters concerning education of pupils with learning difficulties. She acts as a consultant for class teachers and teaches pupils individually or in groups and maintains close contact with parents.
Aberlady Primary School has established a School Council at senior pupil level (P7). The Chairperson and Committee Members are senior pupils and each class appoints a representative to attend the council meeting. In this way we consult with pupils, hear their views, provide for leadership etc.
The School was inspected in October 2004 and the report published in February 2005. The overall findings were very positive and the school was commended in many areas: specifically:
Well-organised lessons with some
examples of very good teaching.
Very good arrangements for supporting pupils with additional learning
needs.
Very good relationships between staff and pupils, and strong pastoral
care.
Very good partnerships with parents and the School Board.
You can read the full report here.
The school hall and classrooms are available for let. Bookings may be made by contacting the School Lets Department, Education and Community Services, Council Buildings, Haddington.
The school fosters links with the community by inviting parents and friends to assemblies, drama events, science days, open days etc. The village hall and church are used for school events, e.g. The Autumn Fair, End of Term Assemblies, Christmas performances. The school occasionally invites parents and members of the community to assist with specific projects. Children are out and about in the village and the surrounding area for Road Safety, nature walks, orienteering etc.
The Parent Teacher Association of Aberlady Primary School is a partnership between the parents and teachers, which aims to support all in the school community. The PTA is a voluntary organisation and all parents and teachers in the school are members. Usually one or two of the teachers are present at meetings.
The PTA raises funds for the school
- these are used to buy additional equipment and resources and
to fund educational activities. This year we have donated over
£4,000 to the school.
The school provides a "wish list" of items that would
benefit the children
We fund the P7 trip and subsidise the transport for the Nursery
trip.
The Autumn Fair is the main fund raiser and is a prime example
of the whole School and parents (and the village) working in partnership.
Social events include Sports Day, Family Barbecue, Halloween Party,
Teas for Christmas Community Performance and the Christmas Concert
There is a committee, but most events only run due to the help given by many of the parents. Most parents help and contribute in one way or another. The meetings are not too frequent, but are interesting. All parents are welcome.
The present committee for the PTA is as follows:
Chair: Sharon Douglas
Vice-Chair: Jill McClure
Secretary: Heather McIntyre
Minutes Secretaries: Paula Aitken, Yvette Harvey
Treasurer: Louise Lissaman
Parent Members: Donna Mathieson, Susan Pirie, Kerry Shott, Jane Kelly, Moira Doig, Jan Bell
