Aberlady Sunday school meets during school term time and is open to any child from birth to age 10. The aim of the Sunday school is to provide children with an opportunity to learn about the church, and their place in it, within a happy, fun and welcoming environment.
We begin most weeks by gathering together in the church where we join the rest of the congregation for worship with hymns, prayers and a childrens address from the minister. We then leave the church and walk together to the Kirk Stables where the children are able to enjoy a snack, listen to bible stories, make their offering, take part in a seasonal or bible related craft or activity and learn some simple childrens hymns.
For part of each session we divide the children into two age groups. The under fives have access to a separate playroom where they can either play with a wide range of toys or join in with simple crafts or games. Very young babies and toddlers are usually accompanied by a parent but, if a child is happy to be left, we will arrange a rota system whereby they can be cared for while their parents attend the church service.
Parents collect their children from the Kirk Stables at the end of the church service.
In addition to the regular Sunday school meetings, there are also occasional family services, usually to mark the major festivals. On these occasions we remain in the church throughout the service and the children are encouraged to participate in and contribute to the service. They may have written special prayers, learned some of the hymns or made decorations for the church.
